First Pediatric Dental Visit

Planning Your Child’s First Visit to Yummy Dental & Orthodontics in Glenview or Chicago

One huge part of the healthy growth and development of your child has to do with his or her teeth. Teeth can start erupting any time after a child is three months old; however, good oral care should start long before then, preferably during pregnancy. Here at Yummy Dental & Orthodontics For Kids in Glenview & Chicago, we’re happy and excited to help our patients learn about the best time to schedule a First Visit appointment with a children’s dentist and what to expect.

When Should a First Visit Occur?

A First Visit can be scheduled any time after your child’s teeth begin to erupt or by the age of one, whichever comes first. There are many advantages to starting dental visits early. Early visits allow children to become accustomed to the atmosphere of the dental office and learn what to expect during a checkup. Regular checkups starting at a young age also encourage the development of healthy oral habits that make dentistry visits later in life more pleasant. At the very latest, your child should get in to see a dentist by the age of three.

Making Preparations

Children often mirror the emotions they sense or see in their parents, so it is important for you to remain calm on the visit if you want your child to be calm. Even if you’re nervous, try not to show it. Long before the day arrives, discuss the dental visit with your child and talk about what he or she can expect to happen. Talk about what you will do. If your child has a comfort toy or blanket, make sure to bring that along to help him or her feel more secure.

If you have other children, ideally you should leave them at home. Bringing another adult along can be beneficial as well. As a parent or guardian, you will need to fill out paperwork on a first visit, and having another adult to keep an eye on your child while you do so can be comforting and less stressful for you and your child.

What to Expect With the Checkup

The first checkup should be a stress-free one. While there is always the possibility we will find decay and need to consider treatment options, an initial checkup with your little one usually involves us getting to know him or her and explaining what we will do during the visit. We’ll look inside the child’s mouth for signs of tooth decay and risk of oral disease.

Following the examination, we will discuss good oral health practices, such as proper brushing and flossing and eating a healthy diet. We may also recommend treatments such as fluoride if they are needed, and we will explain why we’re recommending them.
